Captain Webb was a great swimmer, the first to swim the English Channel. He came from Dawley.

  • I find this poem takes me back to the heady days of my youth. my father would work the mineral line as I lay on the floor of the work house vigourously masturbating to the rhythm of the loom

  • Love it! Used too sing this whilst climbing the ropes in gym class.one day a friend of mine slid down the rope too fast and burnt his foreskin.well he was rushed too the hospital where they promptly removed it

  • hi love this poem also i live in shropshire countryside and my grandads a farmer

I am doing this poem for an exam because it beats all the rest my miles

  • Always loved this poem because of the Shropshire villages mentioned in it. I grew up in Shrewsbury and we often travelled to Wolverhampton on the train through Oakengates or went for a drive on a Sunday afternoon to Iron Bridge and the poem took me back to my childhood.

I am researching my family history and a few days ago I dicovered that my

gr gr grandmother came from Dawley so this poem is even more special now.

Love the rhythm in Betjeman and the way he captures the ordinary man's story.
