Penny was my surviving (widowed) adopted Grey Cheek parakeet.

She was left on a pet shop's doorstep. It was the nicest thing her previous owners ever did for her.

Penny was frightened of everything, so no one else wanted her.

My previous pet bird of 22 years, Wiley, had passed away. Grey Cheeks are very rare, so in Wiley's honor I happily adopted Penny. I did so knowing she was so timid she might never make a cuddly pet.

After four years, she'd become very loving. It was worth the wait.

I had a chance to adopted a buddy for her, whom I named Jake. They spent three years together. He was elderly, though, and died in Dec. 2008.

At the time of this video, Penny had developed a tumor in her liver, so I didn't know how long she would be with me. I'd lost my job, so I had a lot of time to give her.

Here she was, nodding off on my shoulder, as I napped in the living room.

In July 2009, I got a job in California. Penny and I moved there. We were living in a motel, and her tumor was getting worse. It interfered with her breathing, so I took her to two vets. They could do nothing for her. After a month, the problem was just getting worse and worse.

One August morning, a vet put Penny to sleep peacefully. She was euthanized with sleeping gas .

The vet wrapped her in a colorful blanket and a pretty box with flowers on it. I buried her in a pretty, shady grove near the hotel.

Please say a prayer of kindness for this beautiful little soul. I do so often.

Thanks for watching.

  • Kids don't try that at home, the bird could get crushed. Don't sleep with your birds! or put them in your bed at night, you fall a sleep and roll over on them.

  • @TheSongsSmile - True.

This was with me sitting on a couch. Not lying down. Plus I wasn't really asleep. I shot the video.

  • Unfortunately Dozer passed away in the hospital in April...it was cloacal cancer that had spread to his lungs, etc....There was nothing I could do to save him....his body just shut down on it's own and he went to sleep forever. It was a devastating loss and I miss him so much. I wish we had longer together:(

  • @cockatoomom - So sorry!

You still have so much love to give a wonderful little creature. Think about adopting another bird someone couldn't keep. Here's a source:

They are wonderful... and just going to the meetings is fun.

  • OH I am in tears watching and reading this...what a precious girl. I have a 20 year old grey cheek Dozer....he is amazing and so bonded with me...sitting with me actually right on my chest now as I type. He has developed a growth on his left cheek/ neck that is dangerous to operate on...I keep praying it does not cause him problems...I can't imagine my life with out him. THanks for sharing your video.

  • @cockatoomom - I hope Dozer is still well and happy. Cool name, by the way!

As long as they are active, happy and not in pain, birds can tolerate a lot.

You should post a video of Dozer so all can share in your fun with him.

  • @cheyleew - So sorry for your loss.

I remember what a friend said about my departed bird: "Now he's with the only Master who could love him more than you did." The same is true of your dear mom.

    God loves all his creatures.

  • im sorry i had a dear person die too my mother ;( im so sorry i wish i could help but i cant... im so sorry WHY GOD WHY!!!!!!!!!????????

  • @WhiteZonda - Thanks - I still love her so!

The music was from YouTube's library. They show the artist and tune's title right under the still photo of Penny & me. "Stephen Rhodes - 'Crystal Blossom.'"

  • Lovely bird... R.I.P. please, I like the music, it is from?

  • @Sumiux - Many people don't realize how much love a little bird can give.

Get another bird some time - it will need your love, too.
