Russia is one of the fastest growing car trading markets in the world. Only in 2006 the Russians purchased more than 2 million cars made outside Russia. The share of imported cars dramatically exceeded sales of home made vehicles and it makes the produces worry seriously. The history of Russian car producing and market, the reasons why they are on the decline now and hope to change the situation are the focus of The Russian Cars: Wheeling and Dealing documentary.

Have you ever heard about Western Group of Russian Army, in the Germany? @meronmotors, I think there needs to be some clarification to the SUV question. The Niva was the first vehicle to have unibody construction and feature full-time all wheel drive. Since it had locking center differential and low range transfer case, it could also be considered a real off-roader (and it is). In a way, you could say that Niva put a start to modern day crossovers. In any case, you can't argue that it had a pioneering role in automaking.
