http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/butte-america You see the world differently when you work underground. That made Butte, Montana different right from the start as immigrants came from around the world to work the mines. But what they blasted out of the 10,000 miles of tunnels was more than just copper. It was the rise of unions and multinational corporations, and the seeds of the current debate over the environment.

In this clip, the Granite Mountain mine fire killed 168 miners, sparking a strike. BUTTE, AMERICA premieres Tuesday, October 20 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, Independent Lens is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. • a sad story, amazing that America's personal safety was less important then a government's ideology overseas.

  • America should look back on this time in our history with shame. And to think, it all happened because we had a pos president who thought America wouldn't support his decision to go to war.

  • @ogsf4life My family is from Butte! I am not. But I was raised on pasties and pork chop sandwiches.

  • After close to a century of advancing the rights of workers we are right back to square one in Wisconsin. To take away the right of men to collectively bargain should be the death of the Republican Party, but no there are plenty of sheeple stupid enough to buy into Rupert Murdoch's vision for a serf society.

They aren't done raping Montana yet, take a look on G Earth, they have scraped the earth bare and built coffer dams full of mining sludge up half of the canyons in the state.

  • you dont live here we eat pasties and pork chop sandwiches

  • beautiful piece of work!
