This is my fav. song by Wilco and what I believe to be the best song of the past decade. The song musically is simply beautiful, and lyrically is just as great. Enjoy

Lyrics

Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
Wherever you go
Wherever you land

I'll say what this means to me
I'll do what I can
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan

Fundamental problem
All need to face
This is important
But I know you're not listening
No I know you're not listening

This was still new to me
I wouldn't understand
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan
This is what love is for
To be out of place
Gorgeous and alone
Face to face

With no larger problems
That need to be erased
Nothing more important
Than to know someone's listening
Now I know you'll be listening

  • I heard a live version of this song before hearing this studio version. Great song, but I'm disappointed at the flat, shallow producing this record has. I categorize this song under "rainy day." The sound just lacks depth. This sounds like a mono recording on an old transistor radio.

  • @SNight322 Sky Blue Sky isn't really a heavily produced album though, this is why many people are turned off by it. It doesn't rely on production value as much as their other highly praised work does. In fact, I think I read somewhere that this was an almost exclusively live recorded album. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure I read that online some years back.

  • @kevinbelmont I get that, and I'm pretty cool with it.

Oh, and the guitar solo gets a little out of hand near the end imho.

If I can like this for what it's worth, I'm definitely open-minded to allow other opinions, so it's all good.

  • @SNight322 Completely agree. It's a pretty great album, but I was a new fan so I didn't follow them from the beginning till now so I can understand how change can sometimes seem a bit off in some artists. The Whole Love I think more than makes up for the lack of engineering that was worked on in the previous two albums (Sky Blue Sky and Wilco (The Album) ).

Thanks for the open minded comment.

  • DOES ANYONE ELSE SEE THE BACKGROUND TO BRRD MOVING OR WHAT IS WRONG!?!?!?

  • @hoggerstream it's an effect I put with Windows Movie Maker.

  • The guitar solo on this song reminds me of Miles Davis, of all people.

  • @Valvakvlam Agreed only if you see them as simplified and more obvious method. Try seeing them at a different approach, you might appreciate them more.

  • @LeoCastell4 sounds like marquee moon A LOT.

  • The solo, so Santana.

  • @kevinbelmont, I couldn't agree more. Also my favorite Wilco song, in fact, one of my favorite songs by any band,

  • @hamiltonjsh, yes, germans are impossible and japanese are unlikely, in a way most countries would like to be.

  • @cardigans98, you´ve never experience the good working relationsships between japanese and german engineers. They are quite similar:devoted to their work, a bit introvert and shy, willing to do their best in a small garden without thinking about further consequences... But that´s the Zeitgeist of world development.

  • I love that their guitar work sounds more like Television. It has a kind of Post-70s Neo-New York sound to it.

  • No theories about this, presently couldn't give a monkeys chew, but this is soothing.

  • Sounds like Pavement. Mmmm.
