i have the same problem and I honestly think it's taking it's toll on my system. It freezes up more and more lately, and recently it started skipping around on a DVD. I tried the DVD in a different player and it worked fine. Really what bugs me about it is the fact that is you can hear it through the entire house when it happens, it sounds like a weed whacker.

@ShawnDgenerationx this is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard.

No problem. I still don't think the PS3 slim has a particularly good drive, as it vibrates far more with any disc than any other disc drive I own... as if the spindle is slightly out of true or unbalanced. However the worst that could happen would be the vibration causing more wear-and-tear on the bearings and eventually causing failure of the drive, but I really doubt that would happen under normal use.
It's an unbalanced disc. Definitely not fan noise. The reason it shows up with DVDs and not games, is that the PS3 spins DVDs much faster than Blu Ray discs, particularly upon insertion. My PS3 also noticibly hums when any DVD is inserted, though nowhere near as loudly as yours. If it's just some discs and not others, it means the disc is out of balance and the design of the PS3 Blu Ray drive doesn't handle the resulting vibration too well.

@JMMC1005 Thanks. Sounds like a reasonable answer. I have kept it and not noticed any damage from the few discs that make it sound loud, so I'm assuming it's not a big problem (just an annoyance).

its the battery or fan.... ps3's have always had a problem with dvd's espicially the ps2.... it sounded like the fan ... but yeah thats the problem because it uses alot of energy trying to power so u r over working it ...

@dsbizz1 Interestingly, I also own a PS2 and do not have the same problems with DVDs as I have on my PS3. Yes, it is almost certainly the fan, but what irritates me is that the PS3 is supposed to be compatible with DVDs, so I don't think this should be happening. I have contemplated sending it in, but want to know what other peoples' experiences with DVDs have been before doing so. I don't want to risk sending it in if it is like this for all PS3 systems. Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated...

Ok first it says in the instuction manual to not keep your ps3 that close to your tv and i have sort of the same problem... i think its because of the t.v maybe im not sure but if the tvs crap I think it tries to keep the graphics on a certain level and the shitty t.v causes it to work harder i'm probably wrong but I won't know or it could be that King of the Hill is shit... probably wrong so yea...

@ShawnDgenerationx Interesting. I'll have to try it on some different TVs to see if that is the problem. Thanks for the comment!
