VICTORIA - One day after a top BC prosecutor told the inquest into the Oak Bay murder-suicide he needs more money to prevent to prevent domestic violence - the Victoria police department is echoing those feelings.
But there's one big difference: the department isn't waiting for increased funding to start making changes.
Peter Lee was already on the police and crown's radar facing criminal charges when he broke into the family home on September 4, 2007.
In a frenzy, he murdered his son Christian, his wife Sunny Park and her parents before turning the knife on himself.
Victoria Police Inspector Clark Russell testified the murders prompted his department to build a two-person domestic violence unit, one that will be up and running on January 1, 2010.
That's even though assistant deputy attorney general Robert Gillen says his ministry was still waiting to act, and blaming a lack of resources to make improvements.
Russell says Victoria police don't have money either but they're trying.
He's also calling on the five other forces in the capital region to form a larger unit, but again, money from the province is a sticking point.
