@HaloSquirtle Which means yes, the Brutes are a part of the covenant in Halo: Reach, and no, they will not fight the Covenant. (This is discounting any civil style fighting during ages of doubt or conflict, none of which occurred during the conflict of Reach to my recollection, in fact I don't believe any occurred following early contact with humans).

@HaloSquirtle Halo 2 is the first time they were introduced in game, however in the halo universe they have been a part of the covenant since long before Reach ever occurred, they are used as shock troopers early on until late into the time scale of Halo 2 when they began to override the position of the Elites. According to Halo Wikia the Brutes joined the covenant in 2492, while the Fall of Reach occurred August 30th 2552. 2552 - 2492 = brutes joined 60 years prior to Reach falling.
