Full Gas Grill Propane Tank Explosion

Excuse the poor camera work, Uncle makes for a poor cameraman, but this is what happens when you set a full propane tank on a fire, then shoot it with a slugger round from a 12 gauge.

Why not just leave the tank in the fire to burst from the pressure? That would make a much more awesome explosion.

Well I think my uncle had been doing that with older ones earlier, but all that happened was the valve burst, so it just turns into a 45 second long giant flamethrower, while cool, not quite as satisfying, nor as stupid, as shooting it for a full explosion. Had to make sure round went through and through for proper effect, but found the tank a ways off, but in one piece.

That was my cousin firing the gun, but I was still too close to be considered wise... There wasnt any shrapnel, it was all in one piece... 100ft from where it was...

@ed563 please do some research before you comment on stuff you clearly know nothing about. Propane tanks are designed to never break apart to the point of releasing tiny shrapnel. they are designed to break open and fold open releasing all the gas inside.

Typically the tanks do not become a bomb in the sense of exploding outward with the container becoming shrapnel, for the most part the valve section will simply blow off releasing all of the energy, avoiding said hand-grenade style explosion. Still would not want to be ANYwhere near it, but movies have warped peoples perceptions. . .

shrapnel lol, guys, it's a propane tank designed for SAFETY in mind, it's not a friggin clusterbomb or handgrenade. You guys have seen too many movies lol. But when the thing blew up, somebody was too close for comfort allright, mighty stupid :P Otherwise cool explosion lol!

Thats a great explosion but you are standing WAY to close. You are very lucky to not have been seriously burned.

Ah, so it simply building pressure inside doesn't necessarily make the best explosion. Hmm.
