How to stops saying ums and ahhs when you speak
When I (like many people) gave my first speeches I was guilty of using filler words such as ums and ahs. The reason why we say these words is because we are thinking what we are going to say next.

When you feel yourself about to say an um or an ah you should: * close your mouth * pause * go on to the next sentence

This is something that does take practice but after a while you will find the number of filler words you use will get less and less.

  • Yup this is 100% me, I stutter so bad idk why

  • yea but what if u stutter

  • I have a speech impediment.. I have to pause to to get a certain word out that would sound right. I delay it ... I can't help it...

  • Good idea! I use a lot of "ums" when I have to answer on teachers questions during exams when I can not find the right word or when I forget answer.

  • its not good to pause when u wait 5 hours to start the next sentance

  • Very helpful! Silence speaks volumes

  • ummm... good tip ;-)

  • Filler words can be used to hijack a conversation, make a conversation a monologue instead of a dialogue. Used by people that do not wish to hear the other side and so do not allow a pause where someone might interject. In that way it is used for power by arrogant and narcissistic speakers. No real communication.

  • the "Ums and Ahhs" are a trigger by the brain to pause speech while it thinks. Its almost a brain "stutter". You find people with a lot of confidence do not use filler words or sounds. A great way to minimize this is to record yourself speaking off the top of your head. Just think and speak and then listen back and pay attention to where you are using them. . His idea of simply pausing and not saying anything in those moments of thinking is good practice.

  • A good way to practice is t o give a speech to your computer using a webcam or just a mic and recording it.... You can listen back and hear your own umms and uhhhs..... And no one has to know.
