All you've ever wanted to know about the physiology of brain freeze in a fun, convenient musical format.

Be sure to catch all my new songs at http://www.youtube.com/collegeGuy13 !

Sorry for being a little late on this one. I was having technical difficulties getting it online. I wrote a harmony for it, too, but I'm only human and can't sing more than one part at a time. Also, it turns out that the first half of the verse melody is incredibly like a traditional hymn. If you can tell me what the title of the hymn is, I'll give you a shoutout. :)

-----

This is a song
'Bout "ice cream headache"
That bane of kids
The whole world 'round

To explain the physiology
And elucidate pathology
That can take your smile
And turn it upside down

'Cause when you eat your ice cream really fast
It starts to make your head hurt
No, it doesn't really matter if
You bite it, spoon it, or slurp

The pain's your body's way to say
That your mouth is really cold
You know your mom, she tried to warn you
Too bad you didn't do what you were told

Well the ice cream goes in
And as it's forming a bolus
It hits the soft palate
And cools it way down

There the blood vessels shrink
To minimize heat loss
But when you swallow
You turn things all around

All the blood vessels sense that it's getting warm again
And they start to open back up
In fact they open up so far
They sometimes leak a little blood out

And the nerves around them sense the swelling
And thrombocytic serotonin
And they fire off a message that
Your face will soon be frozen

The signal goes up through
The sphenopalatine ganglion
That's where this headache
Gets its Latin name

It was probably coined
By a sick sadomasochist
Who got his jollies from
Eleven syllable words...
...like sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia

And when the nerve impulse gets to the brain
It starts to get all confused
Because the signals get mixed up
When the trigeminal nerves fuse

And all that info goes together
To the spinal trigeminal nucleus
The center in the lower brain
That conveys facial pain to us

So because the brain
Isn't used to getting messages
From the roof
Of your mouth

It interprets the pain
As something more familiar
Like a headache but
Really super cold

That's why when you eat your ice cream really fast
It starts to make your head hurt
No, it doesn't really matter if
You bite it, spoon it, or slurp

The pain's your body's way to say
That your mouth is really cold
You know your mom, she tried to warn you
Too bad you didn't do what you were told

  • wow, nice song ;)

  • thanks. :)

  • listened to 2 of your songs dude and your guitar sounds out of tune if you're trying to use standard tuning... dont think it's drop d tuning heh.. creative shit though man.

  • yeah, true story. i'm using old strings and no tuner. i've just been tuning them against each other. but just today i found out about a reasonable music store in the town i'm now living in, and so both of those problems should be fixed soon. :)

  • hey you kinda funny :) must be hard to make all those big words fit with the timing

  • no kidding. i think i had to practice the line with "spinal trigeminal nucleus" twenty times before i could get it right. :)

I am glad that this exists already!!! Great song, also funny, especially "sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia" part.

And don't listen to anyone who says anything negative about this :) It even doesn't matter if your strings are broken, it sounds as good as it has to sound.
