The main difference between the two is probably that the poor had political power in Rome--hence, they were worth leveraging against other powerful groups, if you were in charge. That's why the poor were often helped out by Julius, the emperors, countless merchants with a lust for power before Julius, et cetera.

The middle class and law enforcement/armies that are professional and are not part of the working poor (i.e our society) makes the poor irrelevant as a political influence.

Not that far off from the actual Roman Senate, really. Kudos to Mel for historical accuracy.

Fraud. Districts around Cleveland and Philly and obama got 99%? Some towns had more votes than citizens, Welcome to your new banana republic run by a bath house queen.

So, a 150% rise in poor people. Interesting. Here's what else is interesting - your comment has zero thumbs up, and his comment has 144 thumbs up. That's ∞% more thumbs up than yours. And by a staggering coincidence, that's ∞ times more than the rise in poor people. By your logic, that means you are ∞ times more unqualified to be a commenter than Obama is to be dictator.

I remember the first time I saw this movie. I was a kid and it was on TV. They censored out the sound at that part, made it seem like a joke about the senate literally showing the guy how they vote.
