"Beat it, Flash. Take a walk". It's Michael Motherfucking Mann!!!! I always say that his best movie is Heat. BUT, the best Michael Mann movie is Thief. It's got all the stuff that you need for his movies--cool dialogue for one. Is there any difference between that line when he flashes the gun and when Dillinger smacks the guy at the coat room and says, "Hit the road, Sport". It's the SAME!!!!! All the themes he loves are explored in this movie. It's perfection.

Great scene. Some really good cop/crime films came out around 1979-1981 or so: Thief, Sharky's Machine, 48 Hrs... there are more but I can't think of them right now. Slightly different feel from we we think of as 70s cop films, but not really "80s" yet, either.
After that, they fell into the 'buddy' film with lots of explosions, and ruined cop movies (48 Hrs helped to start it, but it was above average). Lethal Weapon was really the final death blow to good 70s cop movies.

Me too. I just picked up the soundtrack on vinyl for one dollar. I found the Thief LP a few months ago for a dollar, too.
Oh, and Nighthawks was another good cop film from that era.
