Egypt Orders Slaughter of Pigs

With concern growing over the swine influenza A-H1N1, Egypt's government ordered the slaughter of all of the nation's pigs. There have been as yet no confirmed cases of the virus in Egypt, and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization has called Egypt's order a "real mistake." For the Coptic Christian families that make up the majority of Egypt's pig farmers, the slaughter threatens their livelihood. Demonstrators have blocked streets and thrown objects at Health Ministry workers carrying out the government's order.
