Cloud is good at smashing enemies into walls whilst say Terra is better with magic, then the emperor lays traps everywhere, they can all fight each other without being caught up in a rigged fight. It's a matter of the players preference

Heroes have a story mode of 5 or so acts each when all 10 acts are completed you unlock the extra chapter where your free to play as anyone provided you have unlocked evil characters to go fight chaos. When you've done that you get Shantotto and Gabranth who also have a story each I believe. Not sure on the last one
