Unfortunately all the glossy paint and new business/stadium developments in the world won't do anything to lower the crime levels...
For any tourists looking to visit Jo'burg for the World Cup, seriously, stay the hell away from the CBD. Stick to Sandton, Rivonia or Randburg instead unless you're particularly brave/want to see the "real" Johannesburg. Take a drive past Alexandra or Soweto on the highway if you have to.
It's a great and varied city, but joking aside, keep your wits about you.

It was Apartheid that lead to its deprivation. Had South Africa been multicultural from the beginning it may have been more prosperous. Racism is not a factor for economic growth.
