PlusStarbucks to Close Hundreds of StoresStarbucks to Close Hundreds of StoresThe Associated PressIn a sign that the company's galloping growth days may are over, Starbucks announced Tuesday they are closing some 600 stores nationwide. (July 2)There's been a recent joke among some -- a new Starbucks is opening in the parking lot of Starbucks. An exaggeration -- but a testament to the galloping growth of the company over the past decade.SOT: I'm openly and unabashedly married to the idea that I need a Starbucks on every corner. But the days of seeing several of the green-and-white mermaids on the same block may be over. The company says it's closing 600 latte landmarks in the next year. roughly 12-thousand barristas and other workers -- will be affected. It's not known yet which stores - but the closures will be spread across the country. The news quickly percolated through the caffinated world -- SOT: It seems the company was doing so well - there's a Starbucks opening inside a Starbucks sometimes -- they're everywhere, I never thought they'd have to close anySOT: well the economy's such a mess I guess it's not too surprising. Economic trouble has been brewing for a while at the company. shares have been plummeted over the past two years, but jumped a bit on news of the cutbacks. Still - Even with the announcement -- many say they're pretty sure they'll still be able to get their fix. SOT: "even with 600, I'm sure there'll still be one on every corner "SOT: there's two or three on every corner .. Why do you need so many? Well, if you're counting -- there's about 16-thousand-200 Starbucks around the world. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

  • they had too many stores. You don't need five starbucks stores in a five mile radius. And you don't need 4 of them across from each other at the SAME INTERSECTION.

  • @Shermstyle23 You need 3 starbucks in one corner so that other competitors dont open their stores in the same area and take customer saway from Starbucks+3 stores in 1 corner eliminates queues that would even be worse if there was only 1 store and every customer going into 1 store.

And they are closing stores not because of cannibalization.

  • starbucks made a huge mistake opening too many stores too close to each other. And it sreported that Starbucks will close so many more stores this year.

Businesses keep making riduculous decisions that make them end up in financial trouble and many store closures to even bankruptcy. I dotn think Starbucks will go bankrupt, but 2 stores within a short block is ridiculous. Only if each store is doing well should it be kept. Only good thing about the many stores was more jobs

  • should be called starsucks

  • ya and they still can't even compete with DD

  • lol, yes exploxion, I get it. Hah.

  • oxy moron. oxy-moron? bahahahaha -_ -... geddit? ah ha ha ha

  • Who's going to suffer? Coffee growers. We won't hear about them over the cheers of the blue meanies.

  • I think it's funny how you say their coffee tastes like raw asshole, then you say you hate their gay staff... sounds like an oxymoron to me.

  • People love to hate Starbucks. I think it's funny. Starbucks is closing 600 stores. Sounds like a lot, right? Until you realize they have over FIFTEEN-THOUSAND stores.
