A 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Sichuan province at 14:28 on May 12, 2008.
In Mianzhu city, a clock stopped at the minute when the earthquake hit.
Tremors felt across most of China. Over 100,000 square kilometers are severely affected.
Official figures (as of May 23, 10:00 CST) state that 55,239 are confirmed dead, 281,066 injured and 24,949 are missing. It was the deadliest and strongest earthquake to hit China since the 1976 Tangshan Earthquake.
Your suffering is our suffering. Your hope is our hope. When disaster comes, you and me together, pray for the dead may rest in peace; pray for the survivors of the earthquake; pray for the injured receive medical help quickly and homeless receive urgent relief supplies.
After the hit, more than 100,000 PLA soldiers and armed police, thousands of medical teams, local officials and volunteers were racing the clock for rescue and relief operations.
"People's lives are above all else!" "One minute, one second could mean a person's life!" "As long as the people are there, factories can be built into even better ones, and so can the towns and counties!" --Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
The State Council decided that May 19-21, 2008 was a national mourning period where all people can show their deep condolences for the victims of the Sichuan Wenchuan earthquake.
At this time, all national and foreign institutions shall lower their flags to half-mast, and stop public recreational activities. The Foreign Ministry and China's embassies and consulates have set up a condolence book for signing.
At 14:28 on May 19, people across the country should observe silence for three minutes, upon completion of which cars, trains, ship whistles, and air defense alarms will ring.
I don't know what I should write to end this video, because any words become meaningless compared these appalling scenes. I don't remember how many times my eyes are full of tears when I was doing the research for this video. Especially for those children, may their soul rest in peace!
Many overseas Chinese, international students and even foreign friends have actively made the donations. I hope you can quickly join us. Go to your local Red Cross to donate! Thank you!
