Why not use cell phone at gas station?

From my engineering experience I do not believe there is any reason why this should be taken as the reason for the blow up.

There are already tons of reports out there which also support the view that no where in the world even a single incident of fire at station has been reported due to a cell phone.

No official report as we know. But as some comments also suggest, static seems to be most likely culprit.

One more thing if you look close you can see he was putting his hand in and out of his paints pocket creating a static charge, one thing your trained in the gas hauling industry is never rub your clothing when exposed to fumes from anything flammable..

i drive a fuel tanker and this vid has been around a while,appartly he used a lighter to look inside tank!wtf.any way what isn't clear to me is,just who is that muppet and why does he climb on top of the tanker?unloading procedures dont require accessing the top covers.unloading the tanker is solely the drivers responsiblity,so if he is the servo owner he needs to find a job in another industry.

i watched a mythbusters episode on this same kinda stuff... and if i recall correctly, they proved that only a spark from static could start it.

The reason for this is static electricity causes a spark and fires a weak spot and then tick...tick...tick...tick... boom!
