If you research this work, Corigliano clearly states that this is more of a concerto for orchestra (with a high emphasis on the clarinet). That's why the piano reduction doesn't work. Great playing though.

You are correct. I think of the original orchestration as a concerto for the conductor, who has the hardest job! Corigliano actually refused to do a piano reduction until Schirmer convinced him that no one would perform the piece if he didn't! My pianist and I changed and added some things and worked very hard at trying to capture the original orchestration, but there is only so much you can do. Hey, if anyone knows of an orchestra that wants to play it with me...

Absolutely amazing! I really wish that it could have played in an orchestral setting such as the Stanley Drucker and Richard Stoltzman recordings..the piano reduction reduction just leaves much to be desired (not his fault) Otherwise, great playing!

Thank you all for the kind words. Obviously I am very familiar with this piece, and I agree with some of the other comments. Unfortunately, Stolzman fakes his way through that entire recording. I don't think there's one run where he doesn't just gliss through the technique.

@chessteam i think you should listen to it some more...i hated it the first time i heard it but the more i listen the more i like it. it definitely requires a different type of listening.

@GunbladeBeserkr i think this piece is similar to the nielsen clarinet concerto. it's all in the approach and your understanding of the piece. there are a lot of recordings out there of the nielsen and i hated it, thought it was crap, but the more i studied it and dug into it i realized i just didn't like how others were playing it - ugly and uncontrolled, "bipolarish". i'm not saying this performance is horrible, maybe you just haven't heard it in a way that makes sense to you.

Urk. I think this piece was created just as a test of skill, because no matter who plays it, professional or no, it still sounds like a bunch of notes randomly squished together. Which sounds like crap.

god this is a messed up piece....absolutely brilliant, but like the most messed up piece for clarinet i've ever heard (i think the style is called alienistic where most of it is the performer's choice) personally, i think corigliano got lazy and wrote random notes everywhere really fast but it ended up being both very messed up and a work of genius =P

nice performance; i would say your strongest suit is your attention to detail in making sure all notes are played in the "as fast as possible" figures. however, i would suggest that you add a bit more edge to this piece. it sounds too nice! the style in which corigliano is played greatly differs from brahms
