The reason he refers to the goalie as a defender is to explain that the goalie does not set the offside line, but the other defender does.

And to quote him; "it's the other player who determines when offside is called." NOT the goalie :)

@dominice112 OMG did you even watch the video? If there are 2 defenders between the attacker and the goal line, he is onside. The two defenders usually includes the goalkeeper because he is usually the closest defending player to the goal line. You can not exclude the goalkeeper if he is one of the two defending players nearest the goal line. If the goalkeeper is in the other half, for whatever reason, then 2 defenders come in to play. You are 100% wrong

The goalie has no part in the offside rule. Like he explained, the goalie doesn't set the offside line. It's the defender.

good explanation of the basics of the offside rule, I actually learned something today even though I watch up to 7 games a week! I didn't realise there had to be 2 defenders (or that the goalkeeper was one of them) ahead of the attacker, thanks

In American Football, offside rule is definetely reasonable, but soccer...i don't think offside rule is neccessary because too much dispute between refs and players and too much mistransaction during the show. The fan wants action continuously and enjoy to watch each team to score more goals. Judgement will be served fairly to both sides with no offside rule applied...this offside rule should be eliminated.

Offside rule explained in one sentence;

If the attacking player at the moment of the pass is positioned between the last defending field-player (goalie is excluded here) and the goal-line he is offside.
