The apprenticeship Young Movement was a 10 week journey through the Boston, Massachusetts community as seen by a young group of eighth graders. They were able to reach out and bring their way of living in a powerful documentary about community violence. Over a period of 10 weeks, the students showcased their story though a mixture of creative writing, photography, video design, and the interviewing process. The students took the lead on every aspect of the video production which entailed: how to photograph and film the different sections of the surrounding neighborhood; the proper way how to interview people in a given public area through a series of questions that they had created; and how to express their feelings in some powerful pieces of poetry.

The two poems highlighted in the film were written by two of our students: Courtney Patterson and Cevon "DC" Edwards. The Citizen Teachers that were involved in this great collaborative work were from Reunion Church in Boston; each CT came with a number of different technical backgrounds and skills. They were able to support the students in this production and also provide them with a space to discuss their thoughts and concerns about the things that was going on around them.

From the Boston Globe:

"A short documentary by a group of 12 eighth-graders from middle schools across Boston is part of the lineup. Stacey Gilbert of Citizen Schools, an after-school program on Congress Street for junior high school kids, says that the students traveled around the city and captured life as they see it.

"They tell a story about community violence and opportunity through a mixture of creative writing, photography, video design, and the interview process," Gilbert says. The students got guidance from adults affiliated with Reunion Church in Boston. The volunteers - Citizen Teachers, they're called - have technical backgrounds and were also able to provide students "with a space to discuss their thoughts and concerns about their experiences," says Gilbert. "Young Movement" is scheduled for Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at Hibernian Hall as part of a program of several youth-produced works."
