Here's my (relatively) in depth tutorial on how to make a flyback transformer circuit, and wire up the darn thing to zap some paper.
Credits to www.powerlabs.org, ChuKoNu1's tutorial, as well as drewh0208's tutorial.
The Flyback was taken out of an old Dell CRT monitor.
Of all the transistors reccomended on Powerlabs, i found that only the 2N3055 worked. The other transistor i had was the MJ2955 that didn't work.

  • Did you try the circuit with a MJ15003?

  • @pietzeekoe nope..

  • is the mica inulation really needed? And will a 9v block arc on the inside/cause problems?

  • @pietzeekoe the Mica Insulator IS really needed as the Transistor case itself acts as the Base leg of the transistor, and contact with the metal heatsink might cause interference. however, the circuit i use doesnt heat up the transistor at all so i wont even bother with the heatsink if i were you.

  • "So, yea I pretty much burnt the entire piece to ashes" ahaha

  • if i use a 2sc3040 will it work?

  • nice vid

  • nice carbon ark from the paper

  • Just picked up a discarded pc monitor a while ago at the trash. So this transformer is dc.Time to figure out how to run a Tesla Coil with it.

  • I did exactly same as this vid and heard a squeking sound on the tranformer but no arc happened to neither pins :( Maybe I did something wrong?

    Thanks for sharing

  • Can you make tutorial how to find output pins?

  • We have the same flyback

  • Hi thanks for this. How do i find out the pinouts of a flyback using only connectivity and resistance checks on a standard multimeter ? I'm sure i read of it years ago but i can't find it.

  • @MrGerbilBrain Current is AMPs though. I only have an output source that goes to 30 amps. And what about my Driver... Will additional AMPS harm a 10 volt transistor?

On the other hand... I've probably blown up about 7 of the transistors I've dug out of electronics. is there a specific list of serial number transistors I can use?
