Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty was taken from the ice on a stretcher after a vicious hit from Boston's Zdeno Chara late in the second period of Tuesday night's game between the archrivals.

Pacioretty was trying to get past the six-foot-nine defenceman when he was hit hard into the boards near the Boston players' bench and went head-first into the glass partition between the benches with 15.8 seconds left in the period.

He lay motionless on the ice for several minutes and had his eyes closed as he was lifted onto a stretcher and taken off the ice.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

Chara was given a five-minute major interference penalty as well as a game misconduct.

The hit stunned the capacity crowd, which was buzzing after Montreal took a 4-0 lead. The easygoing exchanges between Habs fans and the Bruins fans in attendance were replaced by an awkward silence.

Security guards in one section intervened to stop a developing altercation, when a livid Canadiens fan turned to a man in a Bruins jersey and screamed, "Are you proud to be wearing that?"
