  • But China is still a poor country, thus making it easier to grow 10% annually. When a country gets developed, like China's neighbors Japan and S.Korea, the growth rate is much lower as the easy gains in productivity have already been made. I agree about the welfare situation though. What happens in America if you get a disease or injury which make it impossible to work? Is that covered in some form of insurance (social security?).

  • We do not have universal heath care. Here it's everyone for themselves mentality. Even with insurance (if you can afford it) if you have something major happen (like cancer, for example) you may have to go the bankruptcy route. The #1 reason for bankruptcy in the USA in medical. Insurance companies look for ways not to pay and provide as little as possible.

  • Yes, we have social security here, but it is a program mainly for retirees. Most people here have insurance thru their work place and when something major occurs the coverage often is denied or the insurance companies look for a way out. This is way the #1 reason for bankruptcy in the US is health care costs.

  • But America has very high economic growth, innovation and technology is first rate in America, just look at the university rankings. Where are the Europeans? Yes, there is more opportunity for ordinary people to do great in Europe than in America because there's less of a class society in Europe than in America, but productivity and economic growth suffers in Europe.

  • Other countries have higher growth (China, for example)Tech? Japan & Europe seem to have better cell service (comes to mind). Universities? Seems to me that more people are educated for less cost in other countries. So, I disagree with the poor europeans suffering, seems to me they're doing very well. For "Ordinary People" (those not in the upper 5% or Bush's have mores) I'd say Europe and Asia look pretty good. Universal Heath Care, 40> hrs work week w/ plenty of time off. Give me That!

  • @gbm322 I would like to say that most chinese cities are developing quite fast. Maybe U should have a look at cities like Nanjing, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Dalian, ect... numbers of amazing cities in CHINA...However, China is still facing a lot of pros...and need many efforts (on issues like gap between rich&poor, lack of innovation, environmental pros). But things are getting better, isn't it?

It's obviously a tough job to feed 1.3bil+ population, and China should be marked a high score! XD...

  • @yuhan11020 what I really want to say here is that I encourage you to see the programs just like this, not the progarms make by some organization like fa lun gong or Free Tibet. They not tell the truth, and they are controled by your goverment. Our goverment is not perfect ,We kown it has a lot of promblems, but it is much better than some organizations who claim that their purposes is for chinese freedom. they not work for china, they work for USA's interest.

  • The program about "The Peoples Republic of Capitalism" really tell you guys about the real situation in china fight now. most of them are truth. I am chinese. my parents are both farmers. We don't have a lot of money .But life is getting better.Actually chinsese poeple now kown a lot about USA than you guys kown about china. We have a lot of problems right now ,but we are working hard to build a much better world.

  • you are totally right.

  • Here's a starter for the USA.

The U.S. government must increase the current education funding . Then multiply the new figure by 10!!!!!!

  • In China, if you don't work, you don't eat. In America if you don't work, you eat at the expense of those who do work. The workers compete for the jobs in the cities there, and each factory provides food and shelter to attract rural workers.

Safety nets are ok, but not big screens and computers to those we call "Poor"

Private Charities all over do the grunt work to help the truly poor. Govt must first steal from the workers to give anything out to the Nonworker. And thou shalt not steal :)

  • China does NOT need to progress YOUR way and by your standards. They don't need to follow the "world according to USA Lib Correctness".

The choice they make is to continue to have 800million chinese left on the out villages scratching out existence and 500 million working to make a better life for THEM. or doing it the way the American Libs want and forsake over a billion to true poverty.

I have been there and the people are great, but not the gov't. Exactly like the US govt. Over-reaching

  • China will soon overtake Germany and the US to become the largest wind power producer in the world. I think China mostly does it for national security reasons. The coal in China is getting poorer and poorer in quality, and power demand grows 10% annually.

I wish they did more to expand rail in the country though. Alot have been done, but compared to the road development, not enough. The new superfast Beijing-Shanghai rail will be the fastest in the world when completed in 2012!

  • Regarding China, I think they are still figuring out what type of system they want. They are still a poor country (remember that Beijing is only 1% of China's population and the Shanghai and Guangzhou deltas are only a fraction of the total size of China). In the next 10 years we will see what path they choose.
