CH-47D Chinook making a tricky landing on a small HLZ at Camp Keating (former PRT Kamdesh) in Afghanistan. It had just dropped off some supplies (note the blivet and lumber in the background) and I was shooting video from a small bridge (note the rotors). Yes, that is a mountain river surrounding the HLZ.

  • Ok, I fly the 47 but i'm not sure why this landing was "tricky". Can somebody explain it...is there something here i'm not seeing.

  • TF Centaur considered it "tricky" due to proximity to obstructions and regular HLZ mortar attacks.

  • @PBlrmkr they were 107 rockets not mortars. you had about two minutes to get off the LZ before they would come in. if only more airports could have that kind of motivation to unload bags.

  • damn... dead thread

  • ok,So how much fuel does she use??

  • @WOC443 i bet the crew wished you was the pilot.

  • Hey, I know that LZ. Gets better at night too, especially when its dusty in there. While I was there, they placed an IED on the bridge next to that LZ.

  • @LegoMovieMan44 Cause hitting something with the rotor blades is a bad thing.

  • ?????

    WHY CANT HE JUST LAND

  • Ok, im not at all an expert, but from where im sitting, telling someone to land an 8 ton bird in front of a rocky wall, to the right of that big rock, just a foot in front of another big rock, and just to the left of a potential cliff...is a pretty tricky move.

  • Its just that its in a relatively enclosed area. Note the hill right behind it. That and the pilot had to hover above the ground and turn more or the rotor might have hit the mountain. That's why I think its "tricky"
