"SHORTLY after the start of the year, Aretha Franklin sat down at her piano in a recording studio in Detroit to sing her newly composed ''So Damn Happy.'' The song's title belied its melancholy lyrics. ''It's in the tea leaves / That we won't get our turn/ You can't always have/ What you want/ You have to take the bitter/ With the sweet/ I'm a big girl/ And I know what I want.''

Ms. Franklin now listens to that song -- and the others on her newly released album of the same name -- with the kind of happy enthusiasm that has rarely stirred her in recent years. At 61, she says, it's hard to be enthusiastic sometimes. ''I don't like,'' she gushed, ''I love this album.'' It's a rare moment of emotion from a diva who normally responds to questions with a few terse words or an icy glare (...)

Ms. Franklin has been something of a missing element herself in recent years. With the exception of the occasional appearance on ''Oprah,'' she rarely gives interviews, because she would rather not deal with the inevitable personal questions. She loathes the depiction of her as a sorrowful woman burdened by her past. She doesn't deny that she's known hard times, but she insistently maintains that they're nobody's business but her own (...)" By Bernard WEINRAUB, NY Times, 2003.

  • @ArethasChild Yes! Oprah went IN, she was holding back. Praise Him!

  • Where can I download this version?!?!?!?!?!

  • You may sing above Aretha, you may sing below Aretha, but you will NEVER sing better than Aretha lol - that "Amazing Grace" is anointed!

  • never knew aretha plays the piano, i'm more sorry for myself :)

  • @whatigot2say Aretha has had great success throughout every decade of music from the 60's to even 2000's. Don't get it twisted. You don't know anything about Aretha, first of all Aretha hasn't did big tour since the 70's in which she travel to Europe and Africa and back to the U.S. Tina is no Queen, Aretha is and Beyonce has said it herself that Aretha is one of the greatest.

  • @whatigot2say Aretha still had great success right until the end of the 70's but the impact she left on music was untouchable. Aretha was never forgetton, not by Whitney, not by Diana and certainly not by you. Who the fuck are you to say that Aretha is forgotten! This woman is great being honored and praised even at 68, take that and stick it up your ass.

  • GO 'HEAD RETHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AND SHOUT!!!! THANK YA!!! GLORY TO GOD!!!!
