I recorded this neuron in 2008 using a 4-wire tetrode. The peak to peak voltage was ~800uv. This is a Medium Spiny Neuron (MSN).

  • What species is this on, and what brain area, was it the corpus striatum?

Nice response, was this spontaneous or under a stimulus?

  • This was in a rat (Long Evans) in the doral lateral striatum. When awake. he was quietly sitting on a stool, sometimes he went to sleep. I noticed that the bursts happened more often during sleep. There were no external stimuli save for me in the room. We have been able to record (from a cockroach) cells almost as big as this. Check out our backyardbrains website for an example.

  • Awesome. How much did that spike cost?

  • Not including time, sweat, blood, love, and tears? Around $25,000....

  • You must've been right on top of it!

  • If it isn't too hard to explain to a Lay person, what is that graph showing? Did you somehow connect an impulse sensor to an individual neuron?

  • I laughed... I cried... The action was almost electrical.
