As long as you DONT get them stripped there HAIR grows in soft all over, I never strip my westie.

After a wash, my westie runs out of the laundry room, runs into the tv room and jumps on the couch, rubbing herself against the pillows. She runs down the couch, jumps off of it, and then jumps on it again to repeat the process. Its so cute.

Top coat a little rough and the under coat is soft. To bring that out in a Westie like we have, you have him groomed with the classic westie cut.

Like people it depends on the individual dog.
I've encouraged my 4 Westies to love water and the combined age of the 4 Westies is now 39 years old and they are all still going strong and loving the water although the 13-year-old is slowing down now!:)

they are two coated - undercoat is soft, the upper coat is rough.. ;)

Ha! Who are you kidding? I have one of my own, and while they don't smell as bad as most dogs, they DO smell doggy when wet. Regardless, IMHO, they are they best dog breed. More like a fur kid than a dog.
