    Now we have one carbon, so that is one methyl group. Thus, we name it

    2-methylpropene

    2 = location of the substituent

    methyl = our substituent (one carbon)

    prop = longest chain

    ene = beause we only have C-C bonds

  • Okay... let's use an exampe: C I

    C-C-C

    1. Count your longest chain. In this case it is 3, which is "prop". Since we have only single bonds add the suffix -ene. So... we have "propene".

    2. Now, we have to name our substituent. Count from the left, where is the substituent? It is at 2. And, if you counted from the right where would it be? ... Also at 2. Because it is the same from both ends we don't have to specify its location. But for the sake of our example we will...
