Part of the danger was due to the bolts holding the differential which pierced the gas tank in a collision which could have been fixed with a low cost kit. Unfortunately, Ford bean counters thought it was cheaper to settle lawsuits involving deaths by fire than recalling/repairing the cars.
There were other problems with the car such as no re-enforcement between
the rear panel and tank, and a lack of a real back bumper that contributed.

@kassandrasduplex

Sounds like the words of someone who was born after 1989.

I remember when my dad bought one of these Pinto cars used in '81.Blue smoke poured out of the tailpipe, and he couldn't get the darn thing home because the engine stalled; not to mention the gas tank.Unsafe at any speed, part II.

You see that horse in the commercial, as he stares at that "Pinto bean" in disbelief? He's laughing under his horse breath! He can't believe how stupid people really are, and that even a real pinto could outrun one produced by none other that "Fix Or Repair Daily!"

Ford may be the only american car company in our future. Remember, GM and Chrysler took the stimulus money and Ford didn't! Proves Ford has character and quality over GM and Chrysler.

25 mpg? Hot dog! Talk about super efficient! That's what made the 60's so darn special: unregulated emissions standard and super cheap gas prices. I

See The Pinto Myth at Newmark's Door. The Pinto was not really any more dangerous than any other small car of the time. But the UAW and the cars it builds have always been a target for the "investor class" who want ever cheaper labor pools.

Take it from one who was there (b.1961) everybody was high in the 70s and 80s, Vietnam war was a downer along with Watergate & the "energy crisis", divorce was epidemic. In the 80s we watched as the Reagan Era turned into the collapse of the manufacturing economy (they called it the Rust Bowl) crack, AIDS and gangs flourished, Iran-Contra. All in all the 70s were better than the 80s as far as employment and affordable living were concerned. The cars were better too. And the music.
