South Korean President Lee Myung-bak is expected to reshuffle his Cabinet and presidential secretariat this week, as talks with the US on resumption of beef imports continue.
Presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan said the work to shake up the Cabinet and the presidential secretariat is in the final phase, and will take shape this week. And it will demonstrate President Lee's promise to reflect the people's wishes.
The Yonhap news agency says Blue House sources disclosed that the president seems determined to replace the prime minister and half a dozen ministers involved in the unpopular US beef import deal, including Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-chun and Health and Welfare Minister Kim Soug-yee.
Meanwhile, South Korea says talks with the US on the resumption of beef imports will be held as originally planned, just hours after its trade minister announced a temporary halt of the negotiations.
Kim Jong-hoon was planning to return to Seoul without reaching a deal a day early.
But negotiations will resume Monday at Washington's request.
