I wondered what it would sound like if I tried to turn "Conways game of life" into music. With help from wikipedia I found several of these cellular automata algorithms and coded some of them to use the launchpad as a display and input to toggle cells as the program ran. The buttons on the right select between different algorithms. The bottom row of buttons is mapped across a major scale and the scale is also moved by the program in a kind of 12-bar progression. The output is MIDI piped into Reason via midi yoke. See my other clips for midi source code...
Its interesting how these rules come up with intricate semi-random repeating patterns which map well to music.. worth more playing i think

  • funny you should ask... simple answer is No.. Launchpad has only USB not a MIDI socket... however I am working on a project to make a standalone version using a Arduino and a vinculum USB host module. Will post something here if it works...

  • is it me or can you vaguely see a swastika in the lights o.0

  • for your stand alone version i suggest melding it into the slots of an older keyboard (older to keep cost down) and making the notes relitave to the way a harmonic table controler that way you get all the notes in an easy way to play each key has a different key from the keyboard and black and white keys it would be a cheaper version of the harmonic table (like instrument and the stand alone of the launch pad but i think a monome might be easier to convert but more expensive depending

  • I did something similar, but without a physical launchpad.

  • CA and UCA on DM, great job, great brew.
