  • I'm not a big fan of Alicia Keys but I know her technique is woeful and you can hear it all over her voice. I think she's one of the most obvious casualties of poor vocal control. One of my all time pop vocalists Whitney as well also damaged her voice through bad technique and smoking etc (as with Christina). It breaks my heart. I's as if they take their gift for granted because it comes so easily whilst the rest of us know what it takes to even achieve some of their sound!

  • I think Christina is great. I heard another vocal coach mention she puts a lot of strain on her voice but had no idea her technique was that bad. It's a shame. I really hope things haven't deteriorated as much as you say :-(. I just don't understand why these singers don't get the help they need since it's their bread and butter. Recently here in the UK it was reported that Adele had strained her voice so much it caused haemorrhaging of the larynx and she had to cancel a tour to recover...

Well, I like the sound of Perry's voice, and she can mix up to an F5. That's about it, though. I could go on listing her shortcomings or just utter lack of musicality, but that's for another discussion. :P

I guess a better and more general example might be Christina Aguilera, who has a horrible technique but "naturally" has an incredible voice (even though she's lucky if she can yell up to an E5 these days).

  • @Astariel2525 Interesting. Can't say her singing or music has made an impact on me..not a +ve one anyway ;-)

  • @Astariel2525

Well, and she needs to work on her pitch/aural abilities. :/

  • @AcousticUplift

Yeah, I think he needs to embrace his natural vocal color more and utilize more of the light edge coordination for a more solid balance of resonance. He's kind of like the inverse of Katy Perry, y'know? Her voice has so much color and she embraces it, even though she really needs to work on her vibrato and breathing technique (she's very good at mixing, though).

  • Too nasal for me too ;-)

  • As I said, I am sure his technique is flawless. His head voice is impressive, true. It's just his general sound isn't pleasing to me. I don't really like his tone. I am usually a fan of a well used vibrato but his voice sounds too tremulous. Technique is important if one is to preserve their gift. But give me a beautiful tone over technical efficiency any day. Let's at least start from a great tone and tidy up the technique, rather than have nothing but great technique.

I think Arceneaux's "actual singing ability" is very impressive. He's a low voice type that can sustain G5's in full head voice and navigate vocal registers very, very quickly (and with quite on-pitch riffs and runs). His style might not be everyone's thing, but he certainly does have singing talent. My only critique really is his lack of incredible chest belts, but whatever.

  • nice where was that ?
