In eighteen-fourteen we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Packingham up to Mississipp'
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we met the bloomy Rebels in the town of New Orleans.
We fired our guns and the Rebels kept a comin'
There wasn't night as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
We looked up the river and we seen the Rebels come
While we head at least a hundred of 'em beatin' on the drum
They stepped so high and we made our bugles ring
While they stood beside the cotton bails and didn't say a thing.
We fired our guns and the Rebels kept a comin'
There wasn't night as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Old Hickory said we'd take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire a musket till we looked 'em in the eyes
We held our fire till we seen their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave 'em hell.
We fired our guns and the Rebels kept a comin'
There wasn't night as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
They fired their cannon till the barrel melted down
So they grabbed the alligator and they fought another round
They filled his head with cannonballs and powdered his behind
And when they took the powder off the gator lost his mind.
We fired our guns and the Rebels kept a comin'
There wasn't night as many as there was a while ago
We fired once more and they began to runnin'
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.
They ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico...

I don't own any part of this audio, it is completely owned by Johnny Horton and his record companies.

I'm British, and I find the historical inaccuracy in this version more offensive than the original was deemed to be. I mean, the other song only tells it how it happened....

Convoluted British twist and Horton did it for them.

Puke---This is typical PC--The original WAS NOT These lyics. The original was BANNED from Great Britain(a fact that makes me proud). Who in the HELL did they think "Old Hickory was! He was Andrew Jackson and he despised the British.

This song always makes me think of my dad, he used to listen to it all the time when we went hunting & fishing. I know it by heart w/out the music playing.
