Helen Hayes made her Hollywood debut with this film - and it was a keeper, eventually netting her a Best Actress Academy Award®. An abandoned young mother's devotion to her child makes her willing to make any and all sacrifices -including a descent into prostitution- to ensure her beloved child's future. Hayes' husband Charles MacArthur of Front Page fame penned the script.
The only film performance of Helen Hayes worth watching. She was a more fascinating and affecting old lady when she was young than she was when she did finally get old.

A wonderful tearjerker...Hayes' performance is superb throughout. It's only film's choppy episodic structure that could have been tightened up. Like many Broadway names who disdained Hollywood filmmaking, we should be grateful that she, Jeanne Eagles and Ina Claire condescended to leave us a few as a legacy of their talent while in their prime!
