This is the result of over a year of testing by several users at the Sony Vegas forums. A full history and archive of this research is available at the link directly above.

It is intended for the majority of consumers who autoexpose using DSLR, Point and Shoot, Pocket, and retail HD camcorders; and who do not have the luxury of video scopes available during editing, including Vegas Movie Studio users.

This tutorial does not purport to represent the views of Sony Creative Software or any other commercial entity, and is an entirely independent volunteer effort.

Our approach to luminance leveling may seem slightly uncomfortable for video professionals. For the vast majority of consumers (who do not have access to zebras and scopes), this method is WYSIWYG referenced to the Vegas preview, and failsafe (uploaded video will never exceed Y'[16,235]). True AVCHD and HDV shooters should see the mod at 9:05.

  • Many thanks for this video! Great information, and I've used the "better" method with success. Would you be willing to expand on your comment that professionals might be uncomfortable with the method- if a person had access to scopes, and knew how to use them, how might their approach differ? Thanks for your time.

  • @FollowThatCairn

Using the page linked above called "Youtube Levels Fix," adjust both Output levels using the video scopes and your eyes to guide you. It takes practice!

  • This video is, by far, one of the most useful tutorials I have come across.Thank you to all those who participated in making it. I have been using the suggested "better" method for both online (YouTube and Vimeo) and adapted to DVD. Before using it, I was very disappointed with the quality of DVD's that used HD source material. Vegas simply wasn't downconverting very well. However, with this method, my DVD's are exactly as I wanted/expected. Again, thanks musicvid and others!

Click "CUSTOMIZE TEMPLATE," match the custom settings, and proceed. You can save the template so you can use it again. Tutorial was written before VMS 11 was released, but the workflow is the same. Further questions please post to the Vegas Movie Studio forum.

  • @musicvid10

In VMS 11 there is no "file", it's "Project"--> Render as and then it opens a menu that's completely different then the one in the video. Weird.

  • Hey Musicvid10, I just hit the same error on Handbrake again. The thread on Handbrake forum is active again with the not so new error messages. Please feel free to have a visit. Its on Windows Tech Support under the title : HandbrakeCLI Crash.

  • Hey I downloaded the codec but when I go the custom tab and then to video format The avid codec doesn't show up. Do I need to manually install the codec in Vegas or should it automatically show up in the video format tab? Please help

  • Argh, uncompressed AVI sucks. I've got some files of 20GB. Luckily I've got a 1TB hard drive, but the writing kills my RAID configuration...

  • @jabulasail

The page at the "jazzythedog" link above is chock full of information about deinterlacing, resizing, and bitrates. Also feel free to post questions on the Sony Vegas forums. Happy Holidays!
