Jose, age 26, thought he was perfectly healthy when he stopped by his doctor's office to pick up the results of a blood test, but he soon learned that he was very ill. After extensive testing, doctors determine that Jose has both lupus and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a dangerous clotting disorder. To learn more about TTP and other blood disorders, visit ASH's patient resources webpage http://hematology.org/Patients/.

This clip was excerpted from the documentary film "Blood Detectives." To learn more about the film, visit http://www.hematology.org/Publications/Blood-Detectives/5246.aspx

  • I found out 19 days ago that I have TTP. My doctor found this video and told me to watch it. It was very informative. I like the animations. It is frustrating to me that they don't know the cause. Live each day to its fullest!!

  • I wish id known about this illness before i lost my son to this two and a half years ago he was only thirty. His life may have been saved if people had known more about it.He died out of blue without warning leaving four children behind.I think this illness should be exposed to the general public worldwide as should sickle cell(my husband is hbss)which is full blown sickle cell.

  • This video has some great animations and helps spread awareness about TTP. It is important to clarify that some TTP patients do not have an ADAMTS13 enzyme deficiency. Much research is still required to discover the mechanism that causes TTP.

  • I have TTP too. Thank you for making this incredible film, it brought tears to my eyes. This disease is so rare and so you don't see publicity like this. I shared this with my friends. It is difficult to diagnose TTP so it's important to spread the word.

  • Hopefully he gets well ... My cousin passed away with this kind of sickeness

  • I just got the call that my platelet count is at 1. I have Evans syndrome.

  • Try drinking papaya leaf tea or extract to boosts platelet count rapidly without side effects. Try it, get it at herbalpapaya com and avoid blood transfusion or spleen removal. Tell others if it works for you if you can save money and time with expensive therapies.!

  • i suffered from' Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura' -itp:..when i was 3 and still have to be observant for any signs .. these videos are so fascinating to me... thanks for the upload

  • This disease may be caused by the lack of an enzyme (ADAMTS13) that is involved in blood clotting. Not having enough of this enzyme causes clotting to occur. As the platelets clump together in these clots, fewer platelets are available in the blood in other parts of the body to help with clotting. This can lead to bleeding under the skin and purple-colored spots called purpura

  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a blood disorder that causes blood clots to form in small blood vessels around the body, and leads to a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
