@jdlaw001 Yes, she's young and naive, Mr Mudstone was really nice to her before he married her and then when he felt he no longer need to impress her (after the marriage) his true bullying character came through but by then it was too late. In those days women had few rights and were the property of men

@christodouls Perhaps I haven't made myself clear. No truly loving father (or, in this case, stepfather) would EVER beat his children simply because they can't make progress in their studies, especially if the sole reason for the lack of progress is because the lessons are too difficult for them. That was precisely the case with David even in the book. To make matters worse, in the book, the Murdstones wouldn't let David's mother help him, so it's THEIR fault he fell behind.
