SKIP (Sick Kids need Involved People) Camp is a family support organization for children and their families who depend on medical technology to live. It is an annual camp for entire families for people from all over Louisiana. The camp provides SKIP children and their families the opportunity to meet other families and share resources, experiences and information.
There is no fee for attending this camp. The cost, which includes room, meals, outings and transportation, is covered by SKIP of Louisiana, which is in turn supported by grants, donations and volunteers. There are activities at the camp for everyone including a parents' night out, teen workshops, sports, swimming, movies and other activities.
The location is now in Bunkie because the Biloxi, Miss., facility was washed away in Hurricane Katrina. The camp is totally wheelchair-accessible, air-conditioned and has a full-service cafeteria along with private rooms and dormitories. There is always a physician on the premises and each child has his or her own nurse. There are therapists, equipment specialists and respiratory techs present, and volunteers provide help with siblings.
