Short Profile Of The Sensational ALEX HARVEY, with words of wisdom from SAHB's TED MCKENNA & CHRIS GLEN taken from Scottish Television's THE GREAT SCOT.

From The Scottish Daily Record 7-11-09

ALEX HARVEY
Born at 49 Govan Road, Kinning Park, Glasgow in 1935, Alex is the most famous rock 'n' roll star the country has produced.
During the 1950s, he played Dixieland Jazz and skiffle, winning a competition that sought "Scotland's answer to Tommy Steele".
In 1959, he formed the Alex Harvey Soul Band playing blues and rock 'n' roll.
In 1972, Alex joined with Scottish rockers Tear Gas and they changed to the The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, noted for their theatrical look.
The music influences varied from blues to music hall stage shows.
After eight albums in five years and a punishing schedule on the road, Alex announced in 1977 that due to back problems he was to retire.
In 1977, after the band and Alex parted, he recorded the solo album, Loch Ness Monster. Alex and the band came together again in 1978 for a final album, Rock Drill.
On tour in Belgium in February 1982, while waiting to take a ferry to shore after performing his last concert with his new band, the Electric Cowboys, he suffered a heart attack and died on the way to hospital, the day before his 47th birthday, in 1982.

  • He deserves his place yes, but why is Bon Scott not in this list, or Angus Young for that matter, seems crazy to me! all legends with scottish blood

  • He is on the list, because people took the time and voted for him, any Scot could be on the list but you had to vote them in, obv no one bothered to vote for Bon or Angus, its simple ,sad but true!!

  • When Penthouse Tapes came out, there was a teen pop magazine who ran an Alex competition. A few simple questions, then you had to write a short note as to what the band meant to you. First prize was 2 tickets to your nearest concert, the Penthouse Tapes LP and a chance to meet the band backstage. Second prize was the same, except no chance to meet the band. I won second prize. Except I already had Penthouse Tapes- and two tickets to the Edinburgh concert. Life's a right bitch sometimes..

  • Who was the guy always ' painted' up ?

  • Time for a bit of an Alex revivial. Even i'm a tad young to remember the band properly but yeah i remember Nick Cave saying SAHB were one of his main, maybe even THE main, influence when he was a teenager in Australia.

  • Alex Harvey Next is the first album I would take with me to a deserted island.

  • Alex put together the well-named Sensational band - Ted, Chris and Hugh were the base but Zal Cleminson was the Pizza Topping!!! Alex was the whole fuckin' HUT!
