"Never try to shift into 1st while moving!!!!" WTF!!! Hey buddy, if your not properly educated in manual transmissions then don't try to teach someone else. Yes on early trans 1st gear is not synchronized, but you can double clutch it into 1st!! As somebody else pointed out, older trans had no synchro's!! So you had to double clutch or float the gears. Either way you were the synchro's!! Dumb Ass!!!!

My wife's transmission is the same way, but shifted on the column (pattern moved 90 degrees counterclockwise) I found a way to shift it into first while still moving - just rev the engine up until it'll slip in. We lived on a super steep hill at the time, and I didn't want to lose my momentum to downshift, and we couldn't go up the hill in 2nd.

our 39 ford had the 3 speed toploader trans in it, that was the last year for the floor shift trans before they went to column shift or "3 on the tree" We're putting the 39s gearbox in our 35 ford 5-window coupe along with a good ole worked flattie

Same as a '63 Scout 80 too. Kinda Cool!

Can a 30/31 Ford transmission be used with a flathead?

He wasn,t even around when we drove them here...

Thats the exact same thing as my 1971 IH Scout 800-b.Except it just grinds if you try and downshift without being stopped.I've never tried to shift a standard trans into reverse when moving forward, it just sounds like a bad idea generally.

early chevys are similar.
Double clutch on the downshifts and it will go into 1st no worries.

First thing I ever learned is how to double clutch a non syncro trans into first. Furthermore, just a very few years before that box was made, there were NO syncros and you double clutched ALL gears, so don't feed me that crap about "having the car totally stopped."
