Jefferson Street Grounds: Philadelphia Athletics (1871-1876)

Jefferson Street Grounds: AKA: Athletic's Park, Centennial Park. Home of the National Association (4 years) and National League (1 year) Philadelphia Athletics from 1871 to 1876. The field was shared with the Philadelphia White Stockings. Located on N. 25th and W. Jefferson Streets Philadelphia, PA. The field opened on May 15, 1871. The inaugural National League game was played there on April 22, 1876 between the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Red Stockings. Boston won 6-5. The last major league game played at the field was October 11, 1890. The Daniel Boone Public School in Philadelphia currently sits on the former site of the field.

The Charltons intermarried with the McArthurs and the McArthurs intermarried with the MacLachlans. My great grandfather William MacLachlan was umpire for the Philadelphia Athletics when he lived at the 29th and Oxford area.

In the 1890s, my McArthur family lived at 2720 Oxford St. Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball team lived at 2932 Oxford St. My great grandfather William MacLachlan was friends with Connie Mack. From 1900 to 1909, Connie Mack's Athletic League (Philadelphia Athletics baseball team) was at the Columbia athletic field, 29th and Oxford Streets. This had previously been the site of the Luther Martin lampblack chemical factory, NW corner 29th and Oxford where my Charlton family worked.

In 1881, my McArthur opened a wagon shop right across the street from this park at Bailey and Jefferson streets. In 1885, my MacLachlan family moved to 2536 Columbia Ave. A ballpark was located at 24th & Columbia. The Phillies had just arrived from Worcester, Massachusetts and made their home here until 1887.
