Jeremy Filsell shows off the blazing reeds of the IV/157/172 Moller of 1965 at the largest Catholic church in North America, located in the non-touristy part of Washington, DC. The mighty Pontifical Trumpet struts its trompette-en-chamade stuff in the final bars.

  • Such a shame he's no longer there...

  • I've heard thru the grapevine (& verified it from the church's web site) that he's interim (at least thru Easter) music director @ Old St. Paul's Cathedral in Baltimore.

  • Great playing. Thanks! Marilyn Mason recorded a great CD on these organs in the 1960's that is available from the University of Michigan.

  • Thanks for letting me know about this. Dr. Mason is one of the great ladies of the American organ world. I wasn't aware she had recorded at the Shrine.

  • This is what Catholic churches are SUPPOSED to look like...and what their music is supposed to sound like. It would be nice to see guitars and tambourines banned from our Catholic churches:-)

  • I'm a brazilian catholic organist, and I totally agree with you. For long have the pipe organs been the official instruments of our Church; as the Catholic Church, this tradition must last forever.

  • @trompettechamade1 Update: she contacted me and sent me the original LPs to ransfer to disk. I have the names of some studios in Northern Virginia, but if anyone knows of someone who can do it with high quality and a reasonable (!) price, let me know. Also, if you know about any of the places listed in the yellow pages, let me know to which one(s) I should go. Thanks.

  • @Mackaronni As far as I know, Soriano is the organist at LA. However, my information may be outdated.

  • @trompettechamade1 Isn't the L. A. Cathedral where Ned Tipton is currently organist/choir master?

  • The Shrine has for years been the largest Catholic church in the Western Hemisphere. I wonder though, if the new, and abominably modern L. A. Cathedral is larger. I have no real numbers, but reading beween the lines, it seems it would nave a ground area of about 90,000 square feet, making it the 2nd largest church in the Western Hemisphere. Can anyone tell me if that's so?

BTW, fantastic posting, as always from you. Thanks ever so much!

  • I think he is better than Scott Dettra..

  • @fourniturev I tried to find it on line at UM, but no luck. I e-mailed Dr. Mason Directly asking her help in locating it. She very graciously replied, but, alas, as far as she knows, there is no CD version of that 2-LP recording. Cest dhommage!

  • @chamade16 - He is now artist-in-residence at Washington National Cathedral.
