Brothers Samori and Amari from the Make It Plain series (sonsofmalcolm.wordpress.com), brings to us this enlightening take on the subject of HBCUs vs PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions). Is there a division between the two types? What makes someone decide on whether to attend a PWI or HBCU? Which provides better education for black people?

Thanks to the Brothers, Samori and Amari, for allowing us to re-post this video on HBCUConnect! You can find more interesting, insightful, and intellectual and pieces on their web site, http://sonsofmalcolm.wordpress.com.

  • @HybridD91 Apparently the federal goverment didn't think so back in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Southern whites didnt' want to go to school with blacks but the government forced them. White parents AND black parents didn't want their children uprooted and bussed to another county or the other side of their city, but the government forced them. You're right, people have a right to be around whatever group they want, but they also have the right NOT to be around people they don't want to.

  • @Sistarovat People can be around what ever group they want to be around.

  • @mmmbrownie You should already know why there is not a WET. It's the same reason gays have their own channels and straights don't. Straight people are the vast majority. All this is plain old common sense. There would be no need for a white channel when the demand to see stories that white people relate to is already met.

  • Segregation today! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever! Governor Wallace stood for what was best for blacks and whites. Black people should stay with black people and white people should stay with white people. I agree with the black dude 100%. What's the big deal with integration? An education is an education. Black people, be proud of YOUR institutions. If y'all put your mind to better yourselves by yourselves, y'all don't need us white people to help y'all out.

  • To mmmbrownie...you sound silly. Who the hell are you to tell the authors of this video to GET OVER IT?? You act as though WE are the ones who put your ass in the oven. If it wasn't for your slave-owning ancestors helping to aid in the oppression of Black America, there would be no need for MY people to step up and be about building universities etc. for ourselves. You want WET (White Entertainment Television) so badly? Create it your damn self, and stop coming here knocking our creativity.

  • I'm white.. and i get sick watching this shit.. like..i'm all for one love.. not the least bit racist... i'm really sorry some of my ancestors i never knew were.. it's FUCKING DONE! it's 2011 jesus... we have bigger global issues to deal with... why not just focus on an education holy shit...like honestly.. if you want to segregate yourselves, go ahead...i couldn't care less. you want BET?? have 50 BET's... but i find myself wondering.. how come there are no WET'S? GET OVER IT. jesus christ

  • yessss!!!! I will be at the capstone in august of 2010!!

  • There is not a difference to my knowledge of the curriculum difference between the average PWI and HBCU, in reference to one being more difficult than the other. I have compared some curriculum with my friends and family who went to both and NO DIFFERENCE.

There is a difference in teaching styles sometimes, but that doesnt mean it is easier/harder, just different and better for one student than the other.

  • There are many myths to HBCUs and PWIs that need to be addressed and many were addressed in this video.

Some people think blacks that go to PWI are snobs b/c some are and those are the ones that usually stand out from the pack. I have met many who think they are better b/c they went to PWI and I went to a HBCU.

That;s the reason why some blacks dislike blacks who attend PWIs. It shouldnt be, but those students aren't helping us who attend HBCUs to think any differently.

  • ****Main reason: Family influence; they attended HBCUs and encouraged me to do so. Many who went to PWIs didnt encourage me or I didnt see myself in them.
