Charlie Patton was the first great Delta bluesman; from him flowed nearly all the elements that would comprise the region's blues style. Patton had a course, earthy voice that reflected hard times and hard living. His guitar style - percussive and raw - matched his vocal delivery. He often played slide guitar and gave that style a position of prominence in Delta blues.
Patton's songs were filled with lyrics that dealt with issues like social mobility (pony Blues), imprisonment (High Sheriff Blues), nature (High Water Blues), and morality (Oh Death) that went far beyond traditional male - female relationship themes. Patton defined the life of a bluesman. He drank and smoked excessively. He reportedly had a total of eight wives. He was jailed at least once. He traveled extensively, never staying in one place for too long.

  • Just uploaded (28th Dec 2010) a new clip of Charlie Patton's song "Down the Dirt Road Blues" ...have a look. I'll be interested in what you think of this one! Comments welcome!

  • This is the creepiest shit I have ever seen.

  • Don't get out much then?

  • I'm not being critical, just asking--South Australian Blues? There were never any blues in South Australia as far as I know. The lifestyle which brought the blues never was there--cotton fields, ex-slaves, oppression from 'the man,' poverty, dirt roads winding through the Delta. Hell, there were no black folks there as far as I know. What's it mean? Please don't insult me I am only asking what blues is 'rooted in South Australia?

  • South Australia? No slaves here! Not even convicts! We do have some of the dustiest dirt roads on offer! No black folks? Our numerous indigenous groups beg to differ! The blues' may have originated in the delta but it has evolved to be 'global'! It can be heard in Japan, The Netherlands, Argentina ... and Australia! We are doing its bit to make sure that it's heard and played loud and clear here!

  • dirty bugger,eight marriages.

  • Ventriloquism.

    He owned tempo.

    He growled like a tiger.

    His slide is another voice.

I dare anyone to play like this man.

    Even close... I'll be waiting.

  • aussie aboriginals never had the blues, yeah right!

  • @spudseals Howso? No blacks (blues-oriented Delta-style black folks, I mean) lived in Oz in large numbers. Blues did not originate with 'native' Americans. Irish? I like so-called Irish music, but it ain't blues.

  • @vinegaroon1 irish, black, native american
