PlusPakistan Blames US Coalition for Troops' DeathPakistan Blames US Coalition for Troops' DeathThe Associated PressU.S.-led forces killed Pakistani troops in an airstrike along the volatile Afghan border that Pakistan's army condemned on Wednesday as 'completely unprovoked and cowardly.' (June 11)Outrage over deadly U-S airstrikes on the Pakistan, Afghanistan border. The Pakistani army says 11 of its paramilitary troops were killed by coalition forces late Tuesday. And the incident is embroiling the already fragile relations between Washington and Islamabad.SOT: there was an incident on the border which led to the loss of lives and we are very sorry at any loss of life. I'm sure that incident will now be carefully investigated. Robert Brinkley, British High Commissioner to Islamabad U-S officials say coalition forces launched about a dozen bombs after they came under fire by anti-Afghan insurgents. And the Pentagon maintains the operation was coordinated with the Pakistani forces. But the Pakistan army says the airstrikes hit their post and called the attack a "completely unprovoked and cowardly act." There's already tension between Pakistan and coalition forces over how to patrol the lawless border. It's believed terrorists-- including Osama bin Laden-- may hide in the mountainous terrain.SOT: We are very concerned about the federally administered tribal areas because they are being used by al-Qaida and it's allies to plot terrorist attacks in other parts of the world - including my country, in Britain - as well as to do damage here in Pakistan and Afghanistan. And it's very important that their space to do that plotting must be more and more reduced and finally eliminated." Robert Brinkley, British High Commissioner to Islamabad The airstirkes have inflamed anti-US sentiment in Pakistan. And it comes at a time when Pakistani officials are trying to reach out to tribal leaders in the border region to negotiate a peace deal. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
