Should you decide to take a trip to Lisbon, this sight is not to be missed. This elevator connects two districts of the city - and it is included in Lisbon's metro network. This means that it is free to use - as long as you have (for example) a valid 24-hour ticket for the metro, which is moderately priced at no more than five euros. According to wikipedia, the shaft tower has a total height of 45 meters (approximately 148 feet), but of course the travel distance is lower. The full article can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Justa_Lift.
There were surprisingly few people waiting for the elevator, regarding that this is one of Lisbon's main tourist attractions; and the weather was fine, too. Nonetheless, I had to wait quite long for a cab to arrive. Apparently, the two cabs are sceduled to take trips only every five or ten minutes. They are manually controlled by attendands who also open and close the gates.

Technical specifications:
Brand: unknown
Capacity: 29 people
Type: winding drum (with counterweights)
Year built: 1900-1902 (modernized in 1907)
Travel distance: 2 stops
