On June 4, 2007, supporters rallied at Legislative Plaza in support of a permanent, fiscally-responsible food tax cut. Less than two weeks later, legislators passed the first-ever food tax reduction scheduled to take effect January 1, 2008. Kudos to all who made this victory possible!

  • One more historical note: In 2002, we prevented the sales tax increase from being applied to grocery food, but that wasn't an actual reduction. It did however set up for the first time in state history, a separate and lower tax for grocery food than for non-food items.

  • From what I understand, in 1984 they passed a reduction of the food tax, but it never took effect because legislators failed to pass the supplemental bill to fund the reduction.

  • Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and supporters, the first-ever reduction of the state food tax will take effect on January 1, 2008. While the reduction is not as big as we would have liked, it is a positive step TFT will build upon in future years.

  • Thanks.

  • There has been a reduction before this year. I believe it was back during the 1980s, but it was put back on soon after.
