Different times: there was a king or a Napoleon III in charge!
BTW, this motet is a citation of psalm 19:10 (Vulgata) : Domine salvum fac regem et exaudi nos in die qua invocaverimus te

Res Publica in Latin means State.
Rome was the ''Res Publica'' all the long her history, also in the imperial times.
The Church used to pray ''pro omnibus res publicas moderantibus'': for all who govern the States.

Strange! Catholics in 19è century france used to be monarchist and sing "domine salvum fac REGEM" (god save the king). Gounod seem to was republican.

Domine, salvam fac Rempublicam nostram and exaudi nos in die qua invocaverimus Te.
I am impressed by this solemn prayer 'pour la République'. 'Domine salvam' is sung three times: 'Prière de l'Église, Prière de l'armée, Prière de la Nation'.
